Overview

The world's first fully autonomous long-distance heavy-haul rail network — certified by Guinness as the world's heaviest robots. 2.4 km trains of three locomotives and ~240 ore cars haul 30,000 tonnes of Pilbara iron ore driverless across nearly 1,900 km of private track, with operators only involved in loading and unloading. Developed with Hitachi Rail from 2006 and in service since July 2018; over 200 locomotives automated, tens of millions of autonomous kilometers, and almost all journeys on the network now driverless. Automation improved average speed and fuel use by ~6%. Designed around mining — autonomous heavy-haul rail, iron ore transport. On paper: 30000 kg payload.
